Setting Chest/Pack Loot

Chest and pack loot is set from the moment you begin a chapter.  If you are unhappy with the way the loot in chests is falling you better make up your mind quick to restart the chapter by using the @chapterX save game. No matter which chapter you are in you may want to go take a peek at the chest loot. This goes for the chests that you will encounter any where, not only the random chests.

At the beginning of a chapter save your game in a new slot titled chXbegin, where X is the chapter number 0 through 3. DO NOT SAVE over this game while you are nosing about, I'll explain later. Start a new save game in a new slot for this poking about. Step into some rooms until you pop a few chests and determine if you like what you see. If not, restore the @chapter for whatever chapter you are in and go poke about after saving in chXbegin again. Needless to say you don't want to make a lot of progress in a chapter until you are sure you have the chests set where they will produce items of interest to you.

Once you get the chests spawning the way you like them, restore chXbegin. You didn't save over it I hope. If so you have already set your combat loot and it may not be pretty! Chest and pack loot are set at the beginning of a chapter, but the loot from combats is set once you step into a room and save your game. (see Setting Combat Loot) So determining chest loot early will not interfere with combat loot if you followed my advice and can restore from a game where you have never entered a room yet in that chapter. Don't worry, those chests will have exactly what you saw in them when you next encounter them.

In my latest experiments I saved all chests, packs, and combats until chapter 3. Made for a very long chapter, but in the end it was worth it. I stepped into my first room and popped open a chest only to find a single dagger of poor quality. What's up with this?! The next few chests had similar crud and I got pretty fed up. I hit @chapter3 and bugged out to the same chests. That one with the lone crappy dagger now held 2 daggers, a High Castle and Free City, 73 gold, a couple potions, and some alchemy ingredients. The rest of the chests produced items along similar lines. Now I was set for a Balanced game, but I got so much mage stuff in this chapter I was about sick of seeing the stuff. I only happened across a few chests that held armor, weapons, or items specifically for the fighter class.

From this and similar experimental games I have discovered it doesn't matter one whit which orientation you choose for your game. Mage, Balanced, or Fighter. You can determine what type of loot you will get at the beginning of any chapter. It may be harder to get good Fighter chests to show up in a Mage Oriented game and likewise Mage chests in a Fighter oriented game, but it can be done. I think you should just pick Balanced and go to it from there. Every one of my experimental games wound up being Balanced ultimately anyway. All the "good stuff" popped up in the Balanced Orientation eventually, including the Sword of LimsKragma.

For those of you wanting the Sword of LimsKragma here's how to get it in Chapter 3. It is very easy, although it can be tiresome, and you loose very little progress if you go take a look right away at the chest where the Mockers have set a trap for you in the sewers. Speaking to Jerard is probably the worst part of this. I just use the escape key to hush his yap up quick and have James and Jaz scurrying into the stinky place immediately.

When you begin the chapter, save in a new slot titled ch3begin or something similar, just in case you find you do wish to keep this chapter going as is. Now save your game again in another new slot entitled chestest or something. Run right to Jerard then your first encounter in the sewer. Wait it out, remember this is not for chapter progression only to get a sneak peek at what goodies will be here later when you decide to do this.

Follow the Mockers and fight the battle out and open the chest immediately. Look at the great sword. You want to get the Sword of LimsKragma right? Well this is how to get it. If this chest has any other great sword oh well hit @chapter3 save again in both your new slots, ch3begin and chestest, and go again. Once you set a great sword of your liking, then restore from ch3begin and do your normal thing in chapter 3. Don't fret, Lims or whatever great sword you wanted will still be there when you get back to the sewers. If you are the type who doesn't trust, then save your game under a new slot with the name of the sword on it or some such before restoring ch3begin. Restore ch3begin, go speak to Jerard, do your thing in the sewer, take the other battles or whatever, and then go get your sword right away. See it is still there, and you didn't believe me. *grins*
